I posted on Team Integra about a problem I'm having with my car... Thought I might get some input from you guys.

QUOTE
I have a 1992 LS automatic. The car recently died on me while I was driving. The car would crank, but wouldn't start. I ended up having to have the car towed, and I had the people at the shop troubleshoot it for me. They told me I had a bad ignition coil and computer. I replaced the ignition coil hoping thats all it would take to fix the problem, but the car still wont start. I put an alan wrench into the spark plug wire to see if I was gettin any spark, but I couldn't get it to arc. I was wonderin if the computer would still prevent me from gettin any spark. If the computer is still a likely problem, I wanted to know what computer I could use to replace mine. I have a PR4-A61, but I haven't been able to find the same one. Thanks in advance guys.

so i take it youve eliminated it being a fuel problem? i dont see it being computer related. distributor would be what i would point my finger at. could it be your timing belt is off a tooth or so or stretched?

Like I said, the car cranks. As far as I can tell though, I'm not gettin a spark. The contacts on the distributor cap and rotor were all in visibly good condition, and the ignition coil was replaced. I didn't see it being a computer problem either, which is why I replaced the coil first.

But no, I haven't eliminated a fuel problem. What's a quick check for that?

i was thinking the distributor also chris. I know when i had a similar prob with my teg i with it not starting when it was warm outside. I Changed the main relay and never had the problem again. Or could be maybe a clogged fuel filter.

If you couldn't get it to arc, and replaced the coil, then i guess the computer could be fried. Hmmm.... I am with chris on the checking your fuel pump fuse and the pump itself, along with your injectors. But if you got no spark, and replaced the coil...... I am lost.

The reason I didn't think it was a fuel problem is because when I was driving, the car just died on me. No warning, no sputtering, it was like I had turned off the car. I think if it had been a problem in the fuel system, I would have had some kind of sputtering because of leftover fuel pressure. There was no loss in power or anything to that effect, it just turned off.

Thats what makes me say no fuel problem. How do your plugs look? Obviously that wouldn't matter if you are getting no spark to them. I would say check your distributor and what not. This happened to my boy, but his shit sputtered, and he had to get a new cap, wires, and his cat was clogged.

The distributor and rotor contacts were in good condition as far as I can tell...

I guess the real question is whether or not the computer would keep me from gettin spark.

an easy way to check your feul pump is to just turn the key to the run position. on most cars you can hear the fuel pump whine. then i would check pressure. never done this before but i think you just get a gauge to hook up to a schrader valve on ur fuel line. injectors would be the next suspect. but all of them failing or getting clogged at once is not likely.

id check to see that your distributor was gettin juice first tho since you said you didnt get any arc from the allan key. also you could probably get a better feel for if you were getting electricity to each plug by actually pulling the plug and seeig if it was arcing across the plug gap.

yeah thats probably a better idea than trying to get it to arc off of the allan wrench, but from my understanding the method I tried is pretty foolproof. Bein so easy to pull the plug out though, i'll have to give that a shot during the day tomorrow. I'll listen for the fuel pump as well. I'd like to eliminate every other possiblity before I fork out the money for a new computer.

If the computer controls timing then it would
But the car is a 92, so I don't think it would

I know on newer cars, esp with traction control and OBDII the computer does, b/c when the check engine light comes on for certain things it can retard timing and such, and Chris, think of cars with MAF setups that use the air to vary fule, shouldn't they vary spark and timing too?
